I hope everyone is safely easing back into school. These are very challenging times, but we must keep working to make ourselves and each other safe. The Troop will continue to offer safe outings and meetings until things get better. The fall camping schedule will be discussed by the Troop Committee next week and I will let you know how we will approach the fall camping season. Expect some changes, but we will figure out how to get outdoors safely! As an example, see below about a canoe outing that will include taking precautions.

 - Troop Meeting - Monday, August 31 – 6:30 – 7:30 – Bunker Hill Forest Preserve
We had a great turnout of Scouts for the Orienteering course at Miami Woods last week. The guys did a great job of navigating the course and finding the control stations. Thanks to Mr. Gulliford for organizing the course for us.

Please note the early start time. The days are getting shorter and we want to have enough time to meet before it gets dark. We will be in the first picnic grove on the right when you enter from Harts Road. Class B uniforms!

Remember your face covering and we will practice physical distancing. Parents of Scouts are invited to stay for the meeting and participate in the activity.

- Des Plaines River Canoe Outing – Saturday, September 12 – Mark Your Calendar!
It is time to go canoeing! We are heading out to the Des Plaines River in Lake County for a canoe float. We will start paddling at Independence Grove Forest Preserve and take out at the Route 60 canoe landing. It’s a 7 ½ mile route (about 3 hours on the river) characterized by clear, shallow water, numerous sand bars and abundant wildlife.

We will meet at the canoe launch in Independence Grove at 8:00 AM to get started. Driving directions will be on the permission slip which can be found in the Resource Center.

The Troop will provide canoes, paddles, and PFDs for all participants.

You must sign up for this outing by sending an email to me by Tuesday, September 8 so we can make sure we have enough equipment.

A late sign-up means you probably will not get to go!

Parents of Scouts are welcome to join us on the river.

Every participant should bring:
  • personal snacks – not to be shared with others
  • at least 2 liters of water
  • river shoes – You must wear something on your feet! We strongly discourage flip-flops.
  • sun protection – sunglasses, hat, sunscreen
  • a bag to keep things in while in the canoe

In order to maintain social distancing, Scouts will need to be dropped off by a parent at Independence Grove on Saturday morning and picked up at Route 60 when the float ends.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

- Philmont 2021 Crew Openings
The 2020 Troop 965 Philmont Crew has been rescheduled for a High Adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico on July 23 through August 6, 2021. There are spots open for Scouts and Scouters interested in joining the Crew. Scouts who have completed 8th grade and are at least 13 years old at the time of the trip are eligible to participate in this High Adventure trip. All participants must also complete a rigorous training program.

A trip to Philmont consists of a 12-day backpacking expedition through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Experience the thrill of climbing mountains over two miles high. Fascinating backcountry programs are included in the 61mile trek selected by the youth participants.

Cost of the trip is $1,600.00 per person, paid over a period of 11 months

*** Personal equipment expenses are not included and will be an additional cost. ***

If there are any questions, contact Mr. Ken Roberts via email at kroberts1648@sbcglobal.net.
