- Thanksgiving Celebration Wrap-Up
We had a great day out at Camp Reinberg in Palatine last Saturday.
- 14 Scouts and Leaders hiked an orienteering course in the Deer Grove Forest Preserve. We found 8 control points over the course of hiking 3.6 miles.
- We finished up at Camp Reinberg for lunch and then some fire building practice. Congrats to Jack (or do you say Jake?) for building the best fire. Jimmy got second place with Joe a close third place finisher.
- We then enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving dinner in the Camp Reinberg Hall.
A great day like that doesn’t happen without a lot of people pitching in. There are many thanks to go around.
- Pete Stolarski was the head chef for the delicious turkey dinner, planning the whole meal and deep frying the turkeys.
- Kelly Albanito was the assistant chef who produced the stuffing, mashed potatoes, and vegetables.
- Chris Adams and Mark Simpson were the turkey carvers.
- Virginia and Mike Reese decorated the hall with very nice Thanksgiving themed decorations.
- Wayne Gulliford made all the reservations and supervised the Scouts on the orienteering course.
- Thanks to everyone who contributed a dessert.
Edison Park Turkey Trot – Thanksgiving Morning – 8:00 AM
Everyone is invited to join us to assist with set-up of the Edison Park Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. We will
meet at 8:00 am in the parking lot across Northwest Highway from Suerth Funeral Home. We will be positioning
water bottles for the runners and helping the caterer get set up. It is a fun time and a great chance to see some of the
logistics of the event. We are usually done by 10:00 or 10:30. No need for uniforms – please dress for the weather.
- St. Juliana Creche Set-Up – Saturday, November 30 – 9:00 AM
Another longstanding tradition of the Troop is setting up the Christmas creche in front of St. Juliana. This only takes about 45 minutes, but we need many hands to get everything out of the basement. No need for uniforms – please dress for the weather.
- District First Aid Meet – Postponed Until February!
The Troop has been training to participate in the Tri-Star District First Aid Meet on Saturday, December 7. We learned this morning that it has been postponed until February. Arghh! We will continue our training and will hold a Troop First Aid Contest to keep improving our skills.
- 2025 Summer Adventure – Boundary Waters Canoe Trip
Troop 965 is planning a Wilderness Canoe Trip in late July/early August 2025. The trip will be a five-day canoe trip in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in northern Minnesota.
The Boundary Waters is a federally designated wilderness of more than 1 million acres within the Superior National Forest. The wilderness runs for 150 miles along the US-Canadian border. On the other side of the border lies Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada – another 1.8 million acres of pristine wilderness. The two combined parks form a core of over two and a half million acres of wilderness canoeing and camping. The American side alone has more than 1100 lakes and hundreds of miles of streams. Nearly all the canoe country wilderness is accessible only by canoe or on foot. There are no roads and few traces of human influence. Access to the wilderness is controlled by designated entry points and access permits.
To be eligible for this trip Scouts will need to meet specific preparation and training requirements, including:
- Minimum rank of Second Class; preferably First Class
- Swimming merit badge
- Canoeing merit badge
- Participation in specific training outings in the spring and early summer
The size of the crew in the Boundary Waters is limited to a maximum of nine people.
The trip will be held in late July/early August and the cost will be approximately $500-$550 per person. As a reference - the final cost of the 2022 trip was $407 per person.
The leaders on the trip have been or will be trained in Wilderness First Aid, Hazardous Weather Training, and CPR/AED.
Scouts, leaders, and parents who are interested in the trip should talk to Mr. Pelrine about their eligibility and any other details regarding the Boundary Waters. Hopefully, the trip will fill; sign-ups will open in January 2025. A deposit of $200 will hold your space on the trip.
Experiencing the Boundary Waters is a life-changing experience for many. It is an opportunity to test your outdoor skills in a beautiful wilderness setting.
