- Thanksgiving Celebration Recap
Saturday started out with 9 Scouts and 6 adults working on invasive buckthorn removal in Deer Grove West. We joined a crew of other volunteers to work on cutting down extensive buckthorn with bow saws and cutters. Some of the trees we cut down were nearly 30 feet tall. Thanks to Wayne Gulliford for working with the Forest Preserves to get the service hours set up.
Next up was lunch at Camp Reinberg. Thanks to Vic Ramirez for setting up a great meal of hot dogs with all the fixings (steamed buns, chopped onion, sliced tomatoes, mustard, relish, and celery salt!), chips, and lemonade. For some reason some of our Scouts put ketchup on their dogs!! This is Chicago. What the heck??
After lunch we set up the furniture in the dining hall for Mass and dinner. We had a little downtime, so some guys explored camp and others played some of many board games that Camp Reinberg has available for campers. Jenga anyone?
Fr. John arrived just before 3:30 to say Mass. In his homily he talked about how Scouting is helping the boys learn right from wrong and helping them figure out what God’s plan is for their life.
Then it was on to the Thanksgiving Feast! Thanks to Pete Stolarski who led the effort to put a great dinner together for more than 50 guests. The menu included three deep-fried turkeys, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, corn, green beans, and rolls. There was a whole separate table for the desserts – pies, cookies, bread, etc. - that so many of you brought. Thank you! We also want to thank Kelly Albanito for running the kitchen and getting the buffet organized. Finally, we want to thank Virginia Reese for the beautiful decorating of the dining hall and Mike Reese for his constant assistance all day with everything.
It was a great day and a wonderful way to start the holiday season!
- Edison Park Turkey Trot Set-Up – Thanksgiving Day, November 23 – 8:00 am
On Thanksgiving morning, we will meet at 8:00 am in front of Suerth Funeral Home on Northwest Highway to help set up the Edison Park Turkey Trot. No need for uniforms and be sure to dress for the weather. The Turkey Trot involves incredible logistics to handle the thousands of runners who participate. It is fun to get a glimpse of some of the behind-the-scenes action. We should be done by 10:30. This is a great opportunity to earn some service hours and have fun at this great community event.
- Creche Repairs, Updating, and Setup – Saturday, November 25 – 9:00 am
The parish Christmas creche is a little worn and tired, so we have worked with Fr. John about making some improvements and repainting it in time for the Advent and Christmas season. This can count for service hours.
I hope to see you at the Turkey Trot. If I don’t – Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have a great holiday with family and friends.
Mr. Pelrine
